Rex is having a hard time adjusting to life at Providence. Tired of being treated as a power tool rather than a person, he sneaks out for a little downtime. At the local hangout, he meets Noah, who gives Rex a chance to feel like a normal kid again... at least until they're approached by The Pack, who bring Rex, Bobo and Noah to meet Van Kleiss. Rex soon learns that Providence is not the only one who wants him. Van Kleiss' offer for Rex to join his cause is refused, with tragic consequence.
A body-controlling Evo has taken over lower Manhattan, and his changing personality makes him hard to predict or control. White Knight is ready to take extreme measures, but Rex is convinced he can help cure the Evo... that's if he can get anyone to listen to him.
Rex, Noah and Bobo sneak away to spring break for some fun in the sun. Rex meets a mysterious teen named Circe, who we soon learn is not only an evo, but there to prove herself to Van Kleiss as the newest member of The Pack.
When a dangerous Evo escapes from its containment unit in the Petting Zoo, all of Providence goes on lockdown, and Rex and Noah are trapped inside with it! During the stress of the moment, Noah admits to Rex that he works for White Knight, hired to keep an eye on him. Rex looses his cool, and for a time, his powers. Now the two must find a way to survive until help arrives - without killing each other first.
Taking some time away from Providence, Rex encounters an enclave of brilliant engineers who are working under the direction of an enigmatic thinker called The Architect. Rex cherishes the chance to experience what a real family feels like, but can't help but feel something is amiss. Breaking the cardinal rule of the commune, he confronts the Architect and learns he is in fact a robot under the control of Zag R.S., an artificial intelligence determined to wipe out all nanites. To do so however, all of humanity will perish as well.
Rex pushes himself too far and must be airlifted to a remote Providence facility to have his surplus nanites offloaded into a containment unit. When he wakes up from the dangerous procedure, he finds himself all alone...until The Pack shows up. Turns out the shifty director of the facility is selling Rex's nanites to none other than Van Kleiss. When the scheme is uncovered, the dirty Providence scientist creates an explosion of nanites that turns him into an evo even Rex can't stop.
