Henry Bates was an English naturalist and explorer who famously spent the 1850s exploring the Amazon rainforest He is best known for his work in the field of biogeography and for developing the concept of Batesian mimicry a form of biological evolution where vulnerable species mimic the sounds of dangerous predators Bates work contributed to the foundational evidence for evolutionary theory
