When three-year-old Saville Kent is found brutally murdered at the elegant Road Hill House on the edge of a sleepy English village, the local community is rocked. On the orders of the Home Secretary, Inspector Jonathan 'Jack' Whicher is despatched to the countryside to restore justice.
Having left the Metropolitan Police under a cloud, Whicher's days as a detective are behind him. However, when he saves a respectable country lady from a violent robbery in a dangerous part of London, she hires him to investigate the savage murder of her 16-year-old niece.
Paddy Considine returns as the Jonathan 'Jack' Whicher, the pioneering 19th-century detective, now working as a private inquiry agent, having left Scotland Yard under a dark cloud. In the third instalment of the series, Whicher is hired by his former political master, a distinguished and powerful grandee, Sir Edward Shore.
[Final Episode] Hired by West Country landowner Sir Henry Coverley, Whicher takes on a seemingly straightforward case of infidelity, following his client's young wife as she meets her lover in London. However, when a key witness mysteriously fails to attend the divorce hearing, the investigation takes a dark twist.
