When smart, cynical 18-year-old George is killed by an errant toilet seat falling from space, she joins the ranks of an undead group of grim reapers. As she clumsily learns to adjust to her new role in the afterlife, George haphazardly hurtles towards her first dreaded assignment: to collect the soul of a little girl.
George (Ellen Muth) is an 18 year-old college dropout with no real skills no interests and no motivation. Her life is built around cynicism that infuriates her family and anyone else who comes into contact with her. But all that changes when George's mortality comes to an abrupt halt in a fluke accident - a toilet seat from the MIR space station falls from the sky and drives her into the pavement. In order to for her soul to move on to its next level George finds out there she has a quota of souls she must remove from those about to die. Dead Like Me revolves around George's adventure.
George suffers reaper's remorse and tries to quit her new job only to find there are consequences when she shirks her reaper duties. Determined to make her so-called afterlife work George attempts to get a real job to support herself and once again reluctantly graces Dolores Herbig's doorway at the Happy Time Temp Agency.
George breaks a cardinal rule and sneaks back to her parents house. She attempts to communicate with her mother only to discover that the annoyingly trite saying you can never go home is even more accurate when you're dead.
George finds a loophole in the Reaper rules and decides to spare her next mark but quickly learns that if you flip-off Fate Fate flings it right back in your face ten-fold. While continuing to keep tabs on her little sister George realizes she can take care of herself.
