Sport Relief raises 38m

Sport Relief raised over £38 million for charity by the end of Friday\'s (23.03.18) programming.

The BBC fundraising marathon, which featured activities including celebrity boxing matches, a 12-hour five-a-side game, a \'Strictly Come Dancing\' sports special and a celebrity boat race, generated £38,195,258 for charitable causes in the UK and around the world.

One of the night\'s presenters, Davina McCall, said: "Sport Relief is always a really special night and this evening, once again, we\'ve seen the public show just how generous they are.

"Thank you, thank you, to everyone who has got active and supported Sport Relief this year."

The highlights of the evening included Andy Murray playing \'Midnight Gameshow\', which saw him surprised in his hotel room by Michael McIntyre before being visited by a string of guests, including Tim Henman, Geri Horner, \'Top Gear\'s The Stig, and Ainsley Harriott.

England women\'s footballer Alex Scott and her partner Pasha Kovalev scooped the special Glitterball Trophy after triumphing over David Ginola and Chris Kamara in the \'Strictly\' one-off and the BBC team beat ITV in the boat race by a boat\'s length.

Celebrity boxing saw former \'Blue Peter\' presenter Helen Skelton triumph over \'Love Island\'s Camilla Thurlow, \'Made in Chelsea\' star Spencer Matthews come off worse in his bout with footballer Wayne Bridge, and The Saturdays\' Vanessa White narrowly take victory over S Club\'s Hannah Spearritt.

During the show, it was revealed Alex Jones and a group of mums had helped raise over £790,000 thanks to a series of challenges, including swimming in Loch Ness, and DJ Greg James\' cycling feat of riding the UK\'s three highest mountains and the distances between them had generated £1,090,522.

Musical performances came from the likes of Kylie Minogue, Meghan Trainor and Snow Patrol.
