This year marks 20 years since Oldboy was released in Japan, one of the most important films of contemporary cinema, and in fact, the film will return to theaters to celebrate. To that end, Neon, the company that has the distribution rights to the film in the United States, presented a new poster for the feature film on May 10. But it didn't stop there. Along with the promotional poster, Neon brought with it an announcement: an Oldboy trailer would be released on May 11.
The announcement was accompanied by a brief but meaningful message: "He's back," along with an image of actor Choi Min-Sik. He, one of the most renowned performers in Asian cinema, holds the iconic hammer with which, in one of the film's scenes, he beats up dozens of men. This sequence is considered one of the best in terms of action movies (and it is not discarded that of contemporary cinema). That is why the symbolic value of this detail in the new poster of the production.
Oldboy was released in South Korea on November 21, 2003. The film, in an environment in which streaming video was not yet thought of and access to premieres was not easy, arrived over the following years in several countries. Gradually, the feature film became a classic for its tone, aesthetic proposal, violence and outcome. These factors, of course, are brought to life in this trailer.
Oldboy is the story of Oh Dae-Su, played by Choi Min-sik. He was kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years. In fact, after his release, he has five days to take revenge on those who imprisoned him. This plot unleashes a wave of violence and surprising narrative twists. The film will be re-released in theaters on August 16.
