In the future, July 5, 2023 will be remembered as an important date in the history of African animation: that's when 'Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire', an amazing science fiction anthology with which Disney+ wanted to give the alternative to creators from Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe. All of them answer with personality to the question: "What does the future of Africa look like from an African perspective?". Taken together, the collection is a new milestone in Afrofuturism, the movement that emerged in the United States in the 1990s that uses science fiction and fantasy to address issues of the continent's diaspora.
In fact, the series was the idea of the South African studio Triggerfish, known for, among other triumphs, that adaptation of Roald Dahl's work ('The Storybook Rebellion', 2016) that earned it distinctions at Annecy or the international Emmys. In addition, to finish pushing it forward, they had the support as executive producer of Peter Ramsey, co-director of 'Spider-Man: A New Universe', with which he became the first African-American nominated for (and winner of) the Oscar for best animated film.
'Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire' will not be the only example of African animation we will have within easy reach during 2023. A musical series for children, 'Kiff', created by South Africans Lucy Heavens and Nic Smal, has been airing on Disney Channel since May 20. Studio Triggerfish has produced Netflix's first African animated series, 'The Super-4s,' due July 20. And in fact, sometime in 2023 should see the light of day, again on Disney+, the series 'Iwájú', a portrait of a futuristic Lagos that the House of Mouse has produced in alliance with the pan-African company Kugali.
