A kidnapping goes horribly wrong in Abigail, a horror film coming to U.S. theaters in April 2024 with Melissa Barrera in the cast. The Mexican actress, who is out from the cast of Scream 7, returns to collaborate with the filmmaking duo that directed her in the last two installments of the franchise, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet. The project modernizes vampire horror and its creators it's like "a bloodbath".
The plot centers on a group of criminals who kidnap the daughter of a powerful figure, hoping to receive a $50 million ransom. Although it seemed like an easy task, the kidnapping is complicated when they discover that the girl Abigail is actually a vampire. The first trailer is now available by Universal Pictures, a video that confirms the tone Gillet alluded to in a past interview with EW: "is a crime movie that later becomes a monster movie."
The filmmakers, known as Radio Silence in the industry, bring a modern take to the 'bloodsucker' genre. Here they work with Guy Busick and Stephen Shields, responsible for the script, and with whom they had previously collaborated for Scream 5.
In addition to marking Melissa Barrera's return to horror after her controversial dismissal from Scream 7, the film is one of the last projects of Angus Cloud, the Euphoria actor who passed away at age 25 last July. Elsewhere, Alisha Weir (Matilda: The Musical) plays the creepy creature, while Dan Stevens (Beauty and the Beast), Kathryn Newton, William Catlett and Kevin Durand also join this mix of crime and supernatural horror. Giancarlo Esposito appears in the trailer as a mysterious man who drops off the criminals and their prey at a mansion and instructs them "no real names, no revealing your stories, no cell phones."
