Although she already had a television career and film appearances, Melissa Barrera's career took off substantially after starring in the last two Scream installments. Initially, Spyglass Media planned for the performer to return to close the arc of the new trilogy, but these plans went awry when she was removed from the franchise after a series of social media posts.
This setback ended up being a major headache for the slasher franchise. Along with Barrera's dismissal came the loss of Jenna Ortega and director Christopher Landon, who called the situation a "dream job turned nightmare". However, this did not limit Barrera as he continued to carve a niche for himself in the horror scene. He recently returned to collaborate with Radio Silence for the vampire film Abigail, and even acknowledged that he would have no objection to joining the Scary Movie universe.
During the promotion of her most recent work with Universal Pictures, the actress responded to the question of whether she would be willing to cross over, participating in the new installment of the popular comedy. "I've always liked those movies," Barrera replied. "When I saw it announced, I thought it would be fun. It would be a lot of fun. I never say never to anything. I'm very open to opportunities that come my way," she added.
In fact, weeks ago Paramount and Miramax revealed their intentions to develop a new Scary Movie installment, with Neal H. Moritz, known for his work on the Fast and Furious franchise, attached as producer. Although details regarding the plot and cast are still a mystery, an addition such as Barrera could increase the interest of a new generation of viewers.
