Contemporary horror cinema is experiencing an outstanding momentum, with a wide range of productions ranging from independent titles such as Talk to Me and Immaculate to major productions such as Thanksgiving and one of the most talked-about titles of 2023, The Pope's Exorcist. The film starred Russell Crowe, one of Hollywood's biggest stars, known for his roles in films such as Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind. Crowe played Gabriele Amorth, the Pope's personal exorcist, based on the father's memoirs compiled in An Exorcist Tells His Story.
In an interview, Crowe revealed that they were initially going to work on a trilogy: "A sequel is currently being discussed. Originally, the producers received approval from the studio for not just one sequel, but two. However, there's been a change of studio directors at the moment, so that's going around in some circles. We set up that character so you could take him out and put him in a lot of different circumstances."

He further argued that there are stories to further explore this universe: "And remember, the man it's based on, Gabriele Amorth, wrote 12 books. So we have more than enough source material to make one or two more of those movies."
The first part of the film takes us directly to 1987, when Gabriele traveled to Spain by direct order of the Pope, as there resides a dark and very sinister evil that has been in force since the Holy Inquisition. Julius Avery (Operation Overlord) directs the film from a screenplay by Michael Petroni (The Rite) and Evan Spiliotopoulos.
While these are recent updates, we will have to wait for new information and previews about a sequel to The Pope's Exorcist.
